Design Trend: Suspended Floral Arrangements
November 20, 2021
Let's face it, we’ve all been there. You lay a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L table for a special occasion, and when the time comes to dish everything up, your stunning design, that you spent hours preparing, is ruined, to make way for the food.
Well, no more. Cue suspended arrangements, which sit pretty above your table, so you and your guests can enjoy the themed décor, long after dinner has been served.
This kind of arrangement has been used as a feature above wedding tables for years, and now people are bringing it into their homes, and we’re not mad about it.
Sure, it’s pretty elaborate, but it’s not meant for an everyday dinner, it’s for occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, and holiday dinners, occasions when you would usually make a fuss of the table decor anyway, only this time, it’s not on the table.
There are of course professional florists that have made this their business, and know-how to create flawless stunning designs, but if you have a creative eye and some string, it’s something that is definitely possible to DIY.
PNW blogger Jojotastic shows you here how to create your own suspended floral arrangement, using just a few tools and materials, and attaching it to an existing light fixture. You can of course add your own take on things, with twinkly lights, themed décor, candlesticks, and even draped material for a softer look. Willowcrossleycreates on Instagram also has great inspo for all things floral arrangements, as well as sharing tips for this kind of floating design. If you want to go one step further, Signe Bay have an e-book, where they tell all on their techniques, including types of structure, colour theory and preferred florals and foliages (it would also make a great gift!).
If you don’t have room for a Christmas tree in a small apartment, or won't be staying put for the holidays, but want to acknowledge - the season is upon us, then consider this technique with some suspended branches with festive ornaments, like this design for Zara Home by Our Food Stories, to sit above your dining table, adding some festive cheer.
With American Thanksgiving just around the corner, are you rushing out to buy some twine or wire, to quite literally elevate your tablescape? Or will you be sticking to the more traditional setting?
Tag us in photos if you go with this decor style for any of your upcoming dinner parties.
