ADC Guide: Wall Lighting

October 29, 2022

We are discussing lighting again, and sharing our top tips on wall-mounted lights - like sconces and picture lights.

Wall sconces are perhaps the most versatile of all fixed lighting, they can be used for task lighting, ambient lighting, and even decorative. They are often used as a way to create balance, add interest to a wall, or highlight certain elements.

If you don't have the help of a professional, there are some basic guidelines for mounting light fixtures that will set you up for success. We have included a downloadable guide at the end of the blog with all the critical dimensions for you to save and refer back to!

Lighting your bedside

Wall sconces are a great option for bedside lighting if you don't have a huge amount of space, or a good option if you just want to free up some room on your nightstand for a cleaner look. They sit neatly above the bedside table and provide excellent task lighting.

Try to find lights with a dimmer option so these lights can double up as ambient lighting.

Here are some wall sconces which set the mood perfectly for the bedroom:

Lighting your bathroom vanity

The main purpose of lighting above your sink is to act as task lighting for grooming, therefore the height of the light should land at around eye level in order to prevent unflattering shadows or glares.

The height will need to be adjusted depending on if you are mounting it above the mirror or beside it. For above the mirror, aim for between 70”-75”, see the guide below for other suggested dimensions.

Top Tip: The tone of the bulb is important here, a cooler whiter bulb is best for vanity lighting to be most flattering and achieve a crisp neutral light - aim for 3,000 Kelvins to achieve this.

Lighting your art

If you like your art enough to hang it on your wall, why not highlight it with a light source? This doesn't have to be a canvas or a print, you can also use lighting to draw attention to a sculptural piece, gallery wall, or shelving.

For this type of lighting, the mounting height will depend on the height of the art. The source of the light should not obstruct the view of the art, so depending on the style, you will need a buffer space. With this type of lighting, you should also be mindful of the depth of the light, ensuring it isn't going to cause an obstruction.

Wall lights without wiring

Gone are the days when you need a wall sconce to be wired in. Lots of brands now have ever-expanding options for plug-in lights, removing previous limitations for wall-mounted lighting.

Something to consider with this type of lighting is that the wire will be on display, so there are certain spots in which they are more suitable for, for example, above a nightstand, where the wire will be partly hidden.

Here are some of our favourite plug-in wall sconces:

You should be able to have fun with wall sconces, they are functional, but also decorative, so play around and pick something that excites you.
