2024 Interior Design Trends Report
January 31, 2024
Let's dive into the interior design and home décor trends forecast for 2024! Unlike the design ‘In and Out’ lists circulating online, it's important to recognize that design is deeply personal and subjective.
While design trends come and go, your home should reflect your individuality and personality. This list is made to spark inspiration and guide you toward creating spaces that resonate with your unique style.
Earthy Tones
The black-and-white trend has dominated for a while now, so it's refreshing to witness a desire for something different. I love a good neutral, and they aren't going anywhere; it's great to see people embracing more colours. There's a noticeable shift toward warmer tones like deep green, burgundy, terracotta, ivories, and brown.
The recent surge of red in the fashion world is seamlessly transitioning into interiors. You can opt for an entire room transformation, a subtle update with pillowcases, or the addition of small décor items. I personally prefer a deeper shade of red, like merlot or burgundy.
Wall Treatments
Beyond the traditional paint, there are many exciting alternatives to elevate your spaces. Some of my favourite wall treatments are centuries-old specialty finishes, plaster, Roman clay, and limewash. I recently completed a primary bedroom with a limewash wall finish, and the result was stunning. There are many ways to use these finishes outside plastered walls, like hood fans, accessories, and even plastered curtain rods.
Wallpaper has made a comeback, and I'm here for it! I've always loved wallpaper and its ability to transform a space significantly. Among my favourites is grasscloth wallpaper; it adds texture and a subtle pattern to the walls without competing with the furnishings.
Other interesting wall treatments gaining popularity include interior stone features and wood veneers. While unsuitable for every home, these elements add character and unexpected elements to interior spaces when integrated seamlessly.
Statement Range Hood
While the concept of a statement range hood is not new to 2024, it will continue to have a strong presence this year. There are too many gorgeous examples to showcase below, but I love how the range hood is becoming the kitchen showstopper. This trend is better suited for larger kitchens, but you can create beautiful results even with a smaller footprint. I suggest you collaborate with an interior designer to seamlessly integrate this element into your new kitchen design.
Cool Silver Tones
In a departure from the dominance of brass and gold, there's a noticeable shift toward cool silver tones. Chrome and aluminum are making a comeback in a big way. Chrome is a cool, reflective finish; I like seeing it in lighting and accessories instead of bathroom fixtures.
Can we take a moment to admire the travertine and stainless steel kitchen from a Parisian apartment? Absolutely gorgeous!
Manmade > Machine Made
An emerging trend that I find particularly appealing is the emphasis on imperfect finishings—items in your home that look handmade as opposed to machine-made. Pieces like ceramic bowls, vases or handcrafted ceiling beams are gaining traction. This shift marks a departure from the mass-produced look, encouraging the support of local artisans and makers.
Natural Stone
Natural stone is experiencing a resurgence. This timeless material, sourced directly from the Earth, is finding its way into various facets of interior design. From bathroom vanities and kitchen countertops to furniture and decorative accessories, marble, quartzite, and travertine make a strong statement.
Playful Tile
Classic tiles are undergoing a playful transformation, with designers exploring innovative arrangements. Stripes are trendy, along with checkered and geometric patterns. Especially the checkered tiles, traditionally in black and white, are now done with various tones, and I love the results.
Darker Wood Tones
To add sophistication and warmth to your space, think about adding darker wood tones like walnut, dark oak or mahogany. These rich finishes are great on cabinetry or pieces of furniture. You can absolutely mix wood tones, especially walnut, which is a versatile wood.
Interior Windows
Interior windows aren’t new, but this architectural detail has made waves in recent months. This is a great feature to bring more natural light and make the space feel bigger while creating a visual separation between spaces. Depending on the age of the house, it can add a contemporary touch or be a decorative accent, all the while being functional.
