The Ultimate Guide to Bedding: Everything You Need to Know
March 20, 2024
Creating the perfect bed isn't just about throwing on some sheets and pillows—it's about curating a space that invites relaxation and rejuvenation.
In this comprehensive guide, we'll dive into the intricate details of bedding, from fabric choices to seasonal adaptations, ensuring your bed becomes the sanctuary you've always dreamed of.
Start with the basics
Before adding any extra pieces, it's essential to establish a solid foundation. Your choice of bedding materials sets the tone for comfort and durability. While there are many different fabric options, we tend to favour natural materials like cotton and linen. These materials not only provide unparalleled softness but also boast breathability and durability, ensuring a restful night's sleep. You can’t go wrong with the linen duvet cover from Parachute Home; it’s one of our favourites.
For those seeking the crisp, clean aesthetic reminiscent of a boutique hotel, Simons offers an array of cotton sheet options at affordable prices. I love these white Egyptian cotton sheets.
When it comes to bedding, fabric choice is paramount. Cotton, known for its softness and breathability, is an excellent option for year-round comfort. Additionally, linen—a natural fibre celebrated for its luxurious texture, durability and antimicrobial properties—offers a sophisticated yet relaxed vibe, perfect for achieving that coveted casual-chic look.
Duvet covers, instead of comforters, offer versatility and ease of maintenance. Opting for a duvet cover allows you to effortlessly update your bedding's colour palette or adapt to changing seasons.
Layers
Once you've established your bedding base, it's time to layer on the luxury. From throw pillows to light blankets, these additions elevate your bed from functional to fabulous.
Avoid the temptation to overcrowd your bed with throw pillows; instead, aim for an arrangement of odd-numbered multiples, ideally between three to five for a queen-size bed. Consider incorporating a large bolster pillow for added visual interest. The Canadian company Tonic Living have some really great options, all with removable covers, so you can use the same insert to change up your look.
Blankets serve not only as practical layers for warmth but also as opportunities to introduce texture and colour into your bedding. This collection from Rug and Weave is great for infusing your bed with personality and charm.
Putting it all together
Now you have all your elements to layer your perfect bed, and here’s how we like to do it:
Step one: stack your shams directly on top of each other on both sides of the bed.
Step two: fold the flat sheet down just in front of the pillows and tuck it in tight under the mattress for clean edges.
Step three: place the bolster pillow, or throw pillows, in front of the stacked shams.
Step four: Fold the duvet cover down a few inches, in front of the bolster pillow. Option to tuck in your duvet cover as well for a really polished finish.
Step five: fold and place the throw at the end of the bed, covering 1/4 - 1/2 of the duvet area.
Change it up
Fold + tuck the throw and the flat sheet together before the start of the bolster pillow.
Fold your duvet cover separately, either 1/2 or 2/3 from the end of the bed.
A word about colours
Crafting a cohesive colour palette can be a daunting task. Start by selecting a focal point—a cushion you love or a statement throw—and draw inspiration from its hues to guide your colour scheme. Experiment with complementary tones and textures, layering different shades to create visual depth and interest.
Finishing touches
Although not essential, consider incorporating aromatherapy into your bedtime routine with lavender-infused mists or essential oils to promote relaxation and tranquility as you drift off to sleep
