How to Prepare for Your Design Consultation

October 14, 2024

South Okanagan Home Design Consultation

Every design project begins with a conversation. This complimentary 30-minute video call is a chance for us to connect and explore your goals for the space. I’ll guide you through a few key discussion points—your vision, budget, and timeline—while also giving you a brief overview of how I work and which of my services may be the best fit. You'll have time to ask questions, and I’ll share my screen to walk you through the process, so you can get a clear sense of what it’s like to work together.

If it feels like a good fit after our call, the next step is a 2-Hour Mini Design Session—what I consider the foundation of a successful project. This working session (held virtually or in person) is a chance to dive deeper into your space and design goals. No topic is off-limits! We’ll walk through the areas that need attention, talk through your lifestyle and preferences, and begin shaping a clear project scope together.

This session can stand alone as a one-time session or serve as the perfect stepping stone if you need additional support.

To make the most of this session, here are three things to prepare ahead of time:

Task #1: Gather Inspiration Images

To help us understand your design style and preferences, we recommend collecting inspiration images that showcase your dream home. Start by exploring platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, where you can find trending interior design ideas, popular home décor styles, and unique room layouts. Look for images that resonate with your vision—whether it’s transitional, mid-century modern, or an eclectic style. These visuals give us insight into the colour palettes, furniture types, and decor elements you’re drawn to.

Before our session, share your favourite images with me so we’re ready to dive in with a clear understanding of your aesthetic preferences. Having a gallery of inspiration on hand makes our design consultation more productive and ensures we’re aligned on your dream interior design style.

Task #2: Set Clear Goals for Your Home Design Project

Defining your goals is essential to creating a personalized design that works for your lifestyle. Take some time to discuss what you want from each space with everyone in your household. Are you looking for a family-friendly living room, a serene bedroom retreat, or a functional home office?

Make a list of your priorities, along with any “must-haves” and “nice-to-haves.” For example, you might need additional storage, enhanced lighting, or a layout that encourages social gatherings. It’s also helpful to establish a budget range—knowing your investment level allows us to tailor our recommendations.

Task #3: Bring an Open Mind to the Interior Design Process

The best design sessions are a balance of vision and flexibility. While it’s great to have a clear idea of what you want, staying open to new interior design ideas can lead to beautiful and practical solutions you might not have considered. During our session, I may suggest colours, layouts, or materials that are outside your original vision but could enhance the space in unexpected ways.

My role is to use my design expertise to refine your ideas and bring out the full potential of your home. By approaching the consultation with an open mind, you’ll discover creative options that align with your style, lifestyle, and design goals. Embracing a flexible approach ensures you’ll get the most value from our time together and feel confident in the design choices moving forward.
