This year has changed the way we work both in and outside of the office. As the home office has become more important than ever, we may as well be prepared and make the best out of the situation.

Apart from the obvious pieces such as having a desk and a comfortable chair, I have curated 10 must-have items to make your office as functional, organized and beautiful as it can be.

1. Task Lighting

It is really important to have proper lighting to perform tasks in your home office. You want to see clearly and feel energized. Here are a couple of things to remember:

a.     Ideally you want to invest in a lamp with a downward direction to the desk surface

b.     Make sure you choose your lightbulb temperature wisely! To get the best results, choose a lightbulb at 4000K which is considered a “Cool White”. You’ll be able to see contrast easily as this colour temperature is closer to natural sunlight. Note: The base unit of temperature is calculated in Degree Kelvin (K).

For a modern LED lamp that also has a USB charging port, check out this desk lamp from Amazon or if you want to up your design game, the Linear Wood table lamp from West Elm is a great addition.

2. CLEVER STORAGE IDEAS

This wireless charging desk organizer triples as a phone charger, holder and desk organization tool. It’s made from 100% bamboo material which is great for the environment.

Who likes to see a bunch of cables dangling behind the desk? Another way of keeping your desk organized is by using a cable management box. Perfect to hide all your ugly cables while being kid and pet-friendly too.

3. pinboard

If you have enough wall space to accommodate this item, I recommend adding a linen pinboard to your home office. If you prefer to DIY one, the talented Athena Calderone from Eyeswoon has created her own linen boards with an easy tutorial here. Then, you have a designated area to write down your daily To-Do list, display your vision board or pin some inspirational quotes or images. Have fun with it, and be creative!

4. beverage reheater

How clever is this electric mug warmer? Never fear to take a cold sip of coffee or tea again. As inexpensive as it is functional, this item is definitely a must in your office space.

5. laptop holder

There are many types of laptop holders out there made of acrylic or metal, but how cool would it be to have laptop legs made from 89 chopsticks! A zero-waste product, plus each piece is handcrafted and engineered to last.

6. webcam cover

Ever wonder if someone is spying on you while you’re logged on to your devices? Well, now you can do something about it by installing this webcam cover which fits your laptop, cellphone or tablet.

7. Blue light glasses

We spend long hours in front of our devices daily, so utilizing blue light protection glasses is very helpful. These glasses help with digital eye strain while giving you great style for your next virtual conference call.

8. water bottle with motivational timeline

I’ve had this bottle for a few months now, and I love it! The hourly countdown helps me staying on track; it’s a game-changer.

9. diffuser

Create a mood by diffusing some essential oil in your office. I discovered that Vitruvi released a cordless diffuser called the Move Diffuser; the name says it all, it’s perfect to move it around the house and as a bonus, it looks good too.

10. greenery

Indoor plants are not only aesthetically pleasing, they have also great benefits like mood-boosting, reducing stress and eliminating air toxins. If you want some easy-going plants, start with a Snake plant or a ZZ plant. In addition, they do great in a low-light environment.

Don’t have a green thumb? Don’t sweat it. There are plenty of great fake plants on the market like this fiddle leaf tree or this faux olive tree. If you’d like some fake eucalyptus branches; I was very impressed with the quality of these ones from IKEA.

I hope you found this article helpful and will create your dream home office space!
